Subject: VERDE TRAILS & ACCESS PLAN - PUBLIC MEETINGS NEXT WEEK

VERDE TRAILS AND ACCESS PLAN PROPOSAL
The Verde Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest (PNF), is proposing approximately
122 miles of new trails, 30 dispersed staging areas, 2 designated dispersed recreation areas,
decommissioning of 21 miles of existing trails and 8 miles of forest system roads.
 This comprehensive effort would improve non-motorized trail opportunities
and general forest area access.
 The proposal includes reroutes, adoptions, decommissions, and new construction.
Background
Starting in 2008 the PNF engaged individuals, local trail user groups, and various local governments in developing a recreation strategy for
Central Arizona that focuses efforts on building and maintaining sustainable recreation infrastructure.
 The need for additional non-motorized trails and access was identified by the local communities in 2010. Beginning in 2010, the Verde
Front Trails Committee worked collaboratively with the Forest Service to further develop sustainable trail proposals to meet the needs
identified.
 The cities of Camp Verde, Cottonwood, and Clarkdale and the Black Canyon Trail Coalition submitted trail proposals and are incorporated
into this plan.
 The PNF also identified trail additions and staging areas to improve overall trail connectivity and access.
