| | | | 03/03/2010 | Club Ride Insurance Summary | chuckmu | | #2557 | During our February membership meeting, there were several questions raised regarding the Club's insurance policy. Following is an explanation of benefits that should provide better overview of the coverage.
The named insured on the policy is the “Club” and not the individual members.
The Club’s insurance policy is intended to protect the “Club’s Interest” and can be broken down into two primary coverage areas:
1. Liability coverage for “other people’s damages or injuries caused by a club member”
2. Excess medical coverage.
Liability Coverage: This coverage focuses on the “Club” and provides a primary coverage amount of $1,000,000 per incident with a total coverage of $2,000,000 per year. This coverage applies to any club member or club invited guest that participates on a non-competitive club ride. Only damages to “other person’s property” or “injuries to other people” are included in this coverage.
Excess Medical: This coverage is more rider focused and provides for coverage up to $10,000/year per club member or invited guest with a $1,000 deductable. This coverage is intended to act as a secondary coverage to an individual’s primary medical coverage. If an individual does not have primary medical insurance then this coverage will act as a primary coverage.
Note:
Organizations are often required to maintain liability coverage either by the event venues or sponsors, so this insurance is a necessary component of our ongoing club operations. Although it provides a level of coverage for the club, it is not a substitute for individual member coverage. On both Liability and Excess Medical, the Club’s insurance company and your personal insurance company may join to settle the claim depending on the specifics of the incident.
Questions From The Meeting:
1. If a club member is in an accident, does the Club’s insurance cover the Club Members ATV? No, the Club’s liability insurance only covers damage to other person’s property and/or injury.
2. After a club ride, members go out for a non-club ride and are in an accident. Does the club insurance cover that accident? No, since the ride is not a club ride there would be no club liability.
3. If an invited guest is on a club ride, is the guest covered under the Club’s policy? Yes, the insurance company realizes that invited guest may be necessary in helping the organization grow.
4. Can the club purchase additional insurance certificates for special events? Yes, the specific cost would be determined by the type of event.
